Augusta, GA
Our trip to Augusta was a spur of the moment to attend the funeral of the infamous Godfather of Soul, James Brown. When Rob discovered the date of the funeral he asked me to see if we could get a hotel room because he wanted to be there. Rob is a music junkie of all types from blues to jazz to R&B and because of me, a little country and lets not forget old school. Surprisingly all the hotels were not sold out, just the ones close to the James Brown Arena where the viewing and services were going to be held. We arrived the evening before and took a ride to the arena so we would know where we were going the next day.
On the news the next morning they were interviewing an elderly lady who was the first in line and had been waiting since 5:30 AM. The service was to be held at 1:00 PM and the viewing of the body began a few hours earlier. When we arrived we were fortunate to get a parking spot on the second row (front row was reserved for the family) directly across from the arena. If you were going to attend the funeral and wanted to go in to get your seat, there was a small waiting line, but you had to wait 3 hours before the service started. However, the viewing line was down the street to the end of the block, turn the corner to the other end of the block, go across the street down to the next block, you get the picture by now and I'm talking long country blocks. So we decided to take a few pictures of the outside activities, go through the town to see the various tributes in his honor and return to the hotel.
It was an amazing site to see all the people gathered in his honor as well as the displays throughout the town. All marquees and window fronts had some dedication to him. We decided not to stay in Augusta after that but to start our drive back home and stop to visit other relatives on the way back. Augusta will never be the same.
