Bermuda
One of the summer's major events is "Cup Match", a cricket game between Somerset (red & blue) and St. George's (blue & blue) which lasts for two days. Attending a cricket game is an event within itself. It′s an all day event which starts in the morning and can go on for ten to twelve hours of play the first day and the second day the game is played until someone wins or the game is called. During half time, a break for players to eat and refresh themselves, there is entertainment provided by the locals or a calypso group - Byron Lee & the Dragoneers are my favorite. Everything is set up around the playing field, houses surrounding the stadium are blasting music, vendors have their tents displaying their specialties of foods, trinkets, etc. and where you sit inside the park is known as a "camp". Each camp has the option to provide food, drinks and party favors. Your camp is shared by family and friends where it doesn′t matter who your team is, just root for them. It′s like a tailgate party inside the stadium but well organized.
HORSESHOE BAY is great for late night swims with your lover, significant other or just strolling along the beach. If you like to watch the planes come in and take off, then CLEARWATER BEACH is the place to be. WOODY'S is where my family and friends meet to have a good time. You have to be careful of the "twins" serving behind the bar, they truly do not understand the meaning of "no more", but it's all in good fun. Then we're off to PRISON OFFICERS, another place where we have a wonderful time and watch beautiful sunsets. Upon leaving the names may have changed to: Alberthia, Magnolia, Penelope, Arthur, etc. etc., but everything is still fine and by now everyone is HOT! HOT! HOT! (toasted)
SCAUR HILL PARK offers wonderful views of the Great Sound and Dockyard. Watch out for your license plate after dark!! That could be the start of a great story.(smile) A trip to DOCKYARD is great for shopping, having lunch at FREEPORT SEAFOOD RESTAURANT or dining at the FROG & ONION and BONEFISH GRILL or hopping on the ferry to go to the City of Hamilton for the day. After a long day and you want to have a quiet dinner with friends, family or that special someone, try HENRY VIII's, the food is fantastic and the service is great. Or you just may want to go down to THE REEFS and listen to some good island music and sit outside on the deck overlooking the beach and when you look straight out, it's like you can see forever.
The City of HAMILTON is where you can find any and everything you want from souvenirs to formal ware to jewelry. Tired of shopping, stop at Casey's on the top of the hill or head to the back of town to the SPINNING WHEEL, a club with a spiral staircase by the pool and has 4 bars, 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs. BOXING DAY is held on December 26 each year and there's a huge parade with floats, gombey dancers, bands, etc. There is nothing like seeing the "Gombeys" perform. They wear massive costumes of many colors and high headdress with feathers and it is truly an exciting event to see. They also perform on New Year's Day. If you happen to party a bit to much while here and you are staying in Somerset, please sing "Christmas Carols" all the way home and I promise you will arrive safely. It keeps the driver awake and you too while you're trying to remember what line comes next in a song and you are all off key. Hilarious!
