Cozumel

Cozumel (Mayan: Island of the Swallows) is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatan Channel. Cozumel is one of the nine municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a tourist destination for its balnearios, scuba diving, and snorkeling. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel.

Scuba diving is still one of Cozumel's primary attractions, mainly due to the healthy coral reef marine communities. These coral reefs are protected from the open ocean by the island's natural geography. In 1996, the government of Mexico also established the Cozumel Reefs National Marine Park, forbidding anyone from touching or removing any marine life within the park boundaries. Despite the importance of healthy reefs to Cozumel's tourist trade, a deepwater pier was built in the 1990s for cruise ships to dock, causing damage to the reefs, and it is now a regular stop on cruises in the Caribbean.

More . . .

Cozumel was another stop on our Jazz Cruise and a county loved by our grandson and his wife. We took a short ride around in a taxi to see what was off the main street. There homes and stores are similar to all other islands, very colorful and festive. Cozumel is known as the "Island Of Swallows" and is the largest island in the Republic of Mexico at 28 miles long and 10 miles wide.

We had breakfast the the Restaurant Costa Bravo before beginning our walk along the shore shops. There are many diamond and souvenir stores along the strip. The smallest Hard Rock Cafe is right in the midst of everything. There were horse & buggy rides, stores decorated for Christmas (we were there in November)and tourist galore.

Later in the day we had a few cocktails and snacks at another restaurant. Walking along the shore is a beautiful site with it′s powdery white sands and crystal clear waters. San Miguel is the only town on the island where cruise ships visit at the Puerta Maya pier and approximately 6 miles from the downtown shopping area. A beautiful walk since you have all day. Some ships dock at Punta Langosta where the main shopping area is just across the street so to speak. Some of the areas were being reconstructed and roped off. Next to this area were two huge gold eagles which were designed perfectly, right down to the feathers. It was amusing to see the guys running the tour boats come to the shore for gas and wade back through the water with the gas can held above the water. Enough trips like that during the day will definitely keep your body fit.
