Washington, DC
We have great friends in DC so we are there often. Our visits are just stopping by which can create an unplanned party to planned social events. We travel together to various places for jazz shows or other entertainers. DC offers a lot for a visitor, the White House, Smithsonian, Washington Monument, Georgetown University, the "Government", etc. etc. When we're not staying with friends, our favorite places to stay is the Capital Hilton on 16th Street where you are centrally located to any place you want to go for events near the downtown area and the Hamilton in Largo, MD when we need some down time before heading home.
One year for Thanksgiving Rob and I went to DC on the Cape May Lewes Ferry located in southern NJ where the car is placed on the ferry and you sail over to Lewes, Delaware and drive the rest of the way to DC. This ferry ride is an hour and ten minutes and being on the water is nice especially when it's warm. If you take the ferry during the winter time, DRESS WARM or stay inside, it is colder than a mosquito's tweeter. While there we visited the Smithsonian. What an amazing place. We went into the theater for the viewing of the stars and you actually felt like you were in orbit.
Another visit was for the Jazz In Our Time All-Star Opening Night Concert and Award Ceremony featuring Nancy Wilson, James Earl Jones, Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the Clayton Brothers Quintet, T.S. Monk, violinist Regina Carter and a host of others to honor the Living Jazz Legends with a Kennedy Center award. This was an amazing event to see all the older jazz legends, some in wheel chairs, some walking with canes and others strutting their stuff.
We also had the opportunity to see Gladys Knight at Constitution Hall. She can still belt out those songs. A guest appearance by her brother Bubba was enjoyable, they put on a great show. I was impressed with the way they handled wheel chair attendees. You have a special place to park and they will come to your car with a wheel chair and take you to your seat and come back to get you after the show. I have been to a number of places, but this was the first to see this in action.
