Greensboro, NC – Part 3

Downtown Greensboro has experienced construction investment in recent years with developments such as NewBridge Bank Park, and residential developments and office construction. The Southside neighborhood downtown exemplifies central-city reinvestment as a formerly economically depressed neighborhood that has been redeveloped into an award-winning neotraditional-style neighborhood. Downtown Greensboro also has experienced a dramatic increase in nightlife with the opening of numerous nightclubs, bars and restaurants. The entire redevelopment of the downtown was aided by the 2006 opening of the Elon University School of Law. The law school is credited with bringing student dollars to the downtown both day and at night. Moreover, the influx of nearly 300 highly educated men and women from across the country has added to the cosmopolitanism of the downtown. Additional human capital has been developed by innovative artistic ventures like the Elsewhere Artists Collaborative, which attracts some of the most promising young artists from around the world to live and create in a 24/7 art installation.

Additional downtown attractions include: the Carolina Theater, Triad Stage (Pyrle Gibson Theater), Blandwood Mansion, Center City Park, NewBridge Bank Park, Greensboro Historical Museum, Greensboro Cultural Center, the J. Douglas Galyon Transportation Depot, and the Greensboro Children's Museum. A multi-million dollar greenway loop around downtown is currently under construction. It will be among the first urban greenway loops in the country and will have walking paths, biking paths, parks, recreational facilities, outdoor classrooms, and art show spaces. The project is being built in phases and could take 5 to 10 years to complete and will also connect with the greenway system throughout the city.

More. . .

The Lindley Park section warrants a page of its own. There are so many places located in just one section that it would make the page too long to enjoy. So buckle up and off we go to Lindley Park.

Walker and S. Elam Streets

When you arrive at the intersection of Walker and S. Elam you have a choice of 5 clubs, a restaurant and a laundry with a bar, pool tables & multiple tvs inside. I will start four doors in from the corner at the Suds & Duds", a laundromat with your usual multiple machines for washing and drying clothes, however, in the back you will find a bar where you can select from many different brands of beer, get coffee and soda, no alcohol. This is the first of a laundromat & bar that either of us has seen. My friend in Canada says they have one by the name of "Duds & Suds". You can clean your clothes and have a brewsky at the same time.

Next door you have "Walker′s." A normal blues club and local pub. Nothing fancy, but they do have my mega game machine on the bar – very convenient I think. While waiting for the band to set up we got hungry. Obtained menus from the barmaid and someone suggested Fishbone′s. So we looked at the menu and decided on something fishy, of course. To our amazement we had volunteers to place the order as well as go and pick up the food for us from across the street. Very hospitable.

Next to Walker′s is The Property Source, a real estate firm if you′re looking for residential property and property managers, this is the place.

Then you have Wahoo′s, a tavern located on the corner. One evening someone had an old vintage truck parked outside and it was in great condition. Someone has spent a lot of time and money in their boy toy. It′s on our list of stops to make in the near future.

Directly across the street from Wahoo′s Sticks & Stones, know for its clay oven pizza. They make their pizzas with everything grown right here in North Carolina. They only use local and organic products. Money received from their recycling each month goes to a charity or a local in need of their help. Have your favorite beer, cocktail and pizza in a quaint atmosphere. Another place on the agenda to visit. Must try the pizza.

On the opposite corner we have the Lindley Park Filing Station which was converted from an actual gas station to a bar. We haven't gone in for a fill up yet.

Moving to the other side of the street is the Fishbones Bar and Restaurant known as the pourhouse and casual kitchen, has great food for eating in or taking out. We have had food from there while hanging out at Walker′s but haven't had the opportunity to visit as of yet.

Next door to Fishbones you have The Blind Tiger. It′s a neighborhood bar with live music and blues jam sessions. The staff there are very informative of different bars/clubs you should visit if you really enjoy the blues. It is a place we will visit often.

Next door to the Blind Tiger is Bestway where you can play the lottery, pick up a bottle of wine or even do a little grocery shopping before heading home. It's considered the city's longest continuously run grocery store.

So you see you can do everything you want right on the corner of Walker & Elam Streets. Shoot pool, do your laundry, shop for wine & groceries, have dinner, buy real estate or just hang out with the crowd.
