Key West, FL
We drove from North Carolina to Key West for a friend′s wedding. That is a serious drive from the beginning of Florida to the very tip. Although Key West is only 168 miles from Miami, at a speed of 60-70mph would be a breeze, not so at 45mph especially after driving 313 miles from the border of Georgia & Florida. Once you′re on Route 1 there are several small towns where you can stop on the way and find some good bargins. You pass through Key Largo, Islamorada and Marathon before crossing the Seven Mile Bridge.
On our way to Authors Guesthouse where we were staying for the weekend we passed through downtown Key West. This historic Old Town guesthouse combines two Bahamian Conch-style cottages and several rooms in the main house. There′s a pool and a garden area filled with foliage where the pre–wedding party was held the night before the wedding. It was just like sitting out back at your home having a get together with friends. The rooms were very quaint and each one named in honor of the literary masters who lived and worked in colorful Key West. It is also within walking distance of the downtown and pier area.
Friday morning we decided to go downtown and do some exploring. We stopped at the well–known Sloppy Joe′s Bar on Duval, and visited several other bars and shops on the way to Jackson Square and the Bahama Village. We also visited The Bull where they give you tags to place on your drink when you go to the restroom. Here we watched speed boat racing, entertainment by the locals and their display of arts and crafts. After all of this we walked back to the guesthouse to get ready for the wedding that evening. If you′re truly adventurous, visit the most unique bar in the heart of Old Town, "The Garden of Eden," located on the corner of Caroline and Duval where clothes are optional at this roof top setting. Great place for an all over tan.
The wedding was beautiful although while waiting for the reception to begin, we slipped away and went to a club next door where "Yankee" man was playing true rustic blues. We went back to the reception for a while but had to slip away again to catch the wonderful sunset of Key West. Rob has always wanted to see the Key West sunset after seeing it in the movie Running Scared starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. The pier was packed with people for the sunset and entertainment that was provided. A little while later we decided to return to the reception and took a taxi back only to laugh at the fact that we were just 2 1/2 blocks away. We were still in time to mix & mingle before it was over. Unfortunately we had to leave the next morning for the long drive back. If we return to Key West it will definitely be via cruise ship or flying directly into Key West.
