Savannah, GA

Savannah is the largest city and county seat of Chatham County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. Established in 1733, the city of Savannah was the colonial capital of the Province of Georgia and later the first state capital of Georgia. Today Savannah is an industrial center and an important Atlantic seaport.

There are numerous attractions in Savannah to increase cultural awareness and make Savannah the "Hostess City of the South". Each year Savannah attracts millions of visitors, who enjoy the city's architecture and historic buildings: the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low (founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States of America), the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences (one of the South's first public museums), the First African Baptist Church (one of the oldest African American Baptist congregations in the United States), Temple Mickve Israel (the third-oldest synagogue in America), and the Central of Georgia Railway roundhouse complex (the oldest standing antebellum rail facility in America).

More . . .

Prior to our cruise the Bahamas we stopped in Savannah since it was one of our road trips. Savannah still has a lot of the old store fronts and the cobblestone road on River Street. If you're on the main street, Bay Street, you have to walk down several narrow steps or drive down a hill to get to the shops on the river front. River Street was once the home of the former cotton warehouses lining the Savannah River. It is now full of new life with restaurants, boutiques and nightclubs. There's even an "Old Town Trolley" which provides a tour of approximately 100 places of interest. Nearby is the famous Tybee Island, which is known for its historic lighthouse and beaches. Savannah is also Georgia′s first city, home to Paula Deen, Savannah′s Queen of Southern Cuisine and their notorious City Market.

There are fairs, festivals, art exhibits, etc. going on year round. There is always something to do in this historic town. If you're walking down by the river front you just may run into a man playing great jazz music. Not only can you tour via trolleys and taxis, you can also take a tour in a horse drawn carriage. How romantic can you get. You can enjoy music festivals on the first Fridays during March and April and on the first Saturdays from March to December on the river front with some events having fireworks. You just have to check their schedule. You can even take a cruise aboard the Savannah River Queen or the Georgia Queen, have dinner, dance, socialize and just enjoy yourself.
