Washington, GA

Washington (originally called Heard's Fort) is a city in Wilkes County, Georgia, United States. The population was 4,295 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Wilkes County. The city is often referred to as Washington-Wilkes by locals, distinguishing it from any other Washington in the United States.

Washington claims to have more antebellum homes, per capita, than any other city of its size in Georgia. Several sites in Washington are on the National Register of Historic Places including the Wilkes County Courthouse, the Robert Toombs State Historic Site, the Mary Willis library a Victorian building, with original Tiffany stained glass windows, and the first free public library in the state.

Also on the list are The Washington-Wilkes Historical Museum, and the recently restored Fitzpatrick Hotel built in 1899.

More . . .

Our trip to Washington, GA was for the graduation of our great-great grandson, Dominique Asbury. We are so proud and happy for him. We arrived Thursday, June 4th and checked into the Jameson Inn, a very quaint and nice hotel.

Washington is a quiet, antique, country town. It was incorporated in 1804, has a population of 4,295 and the total area is 7.86 square miles. We explored the downtown area known as the square before driving out to see Dominique and his mom. Our first stop was the Jockey Club. It is an old establishment that has been remodeled but maintained the original look. The food is great and the people were very friendly. Our bartender was Curt and one of the hosts was named Karen. We also had cocktails with the owner and his wife. I had my first Jagermeister bomb cocktail and have been hooked every since.

The Taliaferro County School graduation was a small class of 20 but the entire gym was filled to capacity (approximately 2,000) with standing room only. The Commencement Speaker, Frank Bates, remembered his graduation and kept his speech to a minimum. There were many awards and presentations. The graduating class gave each teacher a gift, which I found very thoughtful. Dominique remained on the honor roll for the last two years, received basketball and track awards and a FBLA (Future Black Leaders of America) Certificate.

After graduation we decided not to control his time and let him enjoy the after parties with his friends. We stopped at the Jockey Club on the way back to have cocktails and celebrate his graduation.

On Friday before the graduation we had the opportunity to visit one of the antique stores and we actually walked around for almost an hour. There was so much stuff to look at. I found some old mantle cat pieces and Rob found some knock about jeans.

So if you're ever riding on I20 S and have some time to spare, get off at exit 172, GA-17, turn right, when you see McDonalds on your left, turn left and continue straight until you reach the downtown area and stop at the Jockey Club located in the square on the right. Tell them Bob & Peggy from NC sent you.
